WCT organised a special conservation short film screening event on the occasion of Earth Day on April 22, 2021. We showcased three inspiring short wildlife films made by some of the talented Green Hub Fellows, one of whom is also part of the forest patrolling staff in Mizoram’s Dampa Tiger Reserve who moonlights as a passionate cameraman documenting the surrounding wildlife! We celebrated the incredible forests of Northeast India with Green Hub through these impactful short wildlife films.
If you missed watching these films on Earth Day, you can still view them on the YouTube links given below:
1. Narpuh Wildlife Sanctuary – Saving the Last Refuge by Pelevizo Meyase
“Duty is worship. We are here to do and die.” These are the words of forest staff in Meghalaya who are doing everything in their power to protect the last remaining vestige of the protected community forests in the Jaintia Hills District – the Narpuh Wildlife Sanctuary. Coal and limestone mining have ravaged these rich, dense forest tracts with rivers running blue and dying. Poaching for meat and trade is another serious threat that is decimating the wildlife here. Watch how the brave staff of the Meghalaya Forest Department, scientists and villagers come together to save this last refuge. Indeed, it takes a village to conserve a forest!
2. Through Zakhuma’s Lens – Dampa Tiger Reserve
In the far north-eastern reaches of India, an intrepid forest guard is putting an unlikely tool to use in his efforts to protect the Dampa Tiger Reserve in Mizoram – a camera! Meet Zakhuma Don, as he takes you through his beloved forest of Dampa, introduces you to its magical creatures, and tells you about the challenges that he and the rest of the Mizoram Forest Department face while protecting this forest. Dampa lies along an international border and often is infiltrated by dangerous poachers and insurgents. The forest staff risk their lives everyday as they take on the behemoth task of protecting Dampa, a paradise on Earth. Zakhuma is one of them. He is using his passion for documenting wildlife in the forest and sharing his stories with the world to galvanise love and support for Dampa. Zakhuma is a Green Hub Fellow.
3. Balpakram – Mystical Land of the Eternal Winds by Debashish Nandi, Mordecai Panmei, Promod Saikia and Parixit Kafley
Balpakram is a land steeped in rich wildlife, sacred and ancient cultures of the Garo tribes, unexplored geological marvels and incomparable beauty, all of which lie threatened. To protect Balpakram for posterity, the community, in an inspiring move, came forward of their own accord to offer their land to have it declared as a Protected Area. Dedicated surveys by wildlife biologists have revealed a staggering diversity in the wildlife here in the forest of Balpakram in Meghalaya, including some of the rarest and most endangered species such as the clouded leopard, marbled cat, small-toothed palm civet and India’s only species of insectivorous pitcher plant. The Balpakram National Park sits on one of the sites of massive geological importance, with several fossils of prehistoric animals including the dinosaurs discovered here. A labyrinth of caves within the National Park still remains to be explored. What other exciting discoveries await in this land of the eternal winds?
