With the aim of creating awareness among law students in India about the wildlife conservation and environmental challenges and sensitising them to their significance, the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT), in partnership with Government Law College, Mumbai, organised the fourth edition of the Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition on January 20-22, 2023, in Mumbai. The event, akin to the past three editions, is supported by DSP Investment Managers.

The moot proposition for this year’s competition centered around human-wildlife conflict, a burning conservation issue in India, with a focus on selective culling as a tool for managing and mitigating conflict. A total of 14 teams representing some of the prestigious law colleges and institutions from across India participated in the moot court competition and the participating law students put their best foot forward and fought hard in the various rounds held over three days. The team from the Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai, was adjudged as the best team. The Himachal Pradesh National Law University team was declared runner-up. Hon’ble Shri Justice Kamal Khata, Bombay High court, graciously presided over the final round held on January 22 in the Government Law College auditorium.
The event commenced on January 20 with an important and engaging panel discussion held for the benefit of the participating students. The panelists comprised eminent conservation experts including Dr. Jitendra Ramgaokar, Field Director, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve; Ms. Vidya Venkatesh, Director, The Last Wilderness Foundation; Dr. Anish Andheria, President, Wildlife Conservation Trust; and Ms. Shivangi Adani, Environmental Lawyer, Innovation Associate Consultant at Dalberg Advisors, Asia, who moderated the discussion.
