The Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) and the West Bengal Forest Department jointly organised a workshop on Wildlife Law Enforcement for frontline staff in the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve on July 12-13, 2022. Frontline staff are the wildlife’s first line of defense, and the workshop was designed to equip them with legal knowledge to bolster their efforts to curb wildlife trafficking. During the workshop, WCT experts Mridula Vijairaghavan, Environmental Lawyer, and Sanjay Thakur, Wildlife Crime and Law Enforcement expert walked participants through existing law and procedure to be followed while booking wildlife crime cases under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
The sessions included the need to address wildlife crime, the prohibitions, penalties and procedure to be followed to book cases under the Act. The sessions were interactive and hands-on. The workshop was attended by 40 members of the frontline staff, the Additional Deputy Director, Deputy Director and the Field Director, Sundarbans Tiger Reserve.
